Andrew Anzur Clement

Author of historical fantasy novels and Slovene-American

One of the great dreams of many people is to move to another country, perhaps to a picturesque European city with a high quality of life, settle into an apartment with a view and start work on a book, taking breaks for rest and inspiration by walking the narrow streets, finding a comfortable café, and watching life unfold.

Slovenia provides the location of my new home and the background to my family and stories. I've been living in Slovenia since December 2017, but have been here many times over the past ten years. My mom's family is originally from the town of Kresnice pri Litiji, but they left for the US shortly before the First World War.

After finishing my Ph.D. in Brussels, I decided that I wanted to put some roots down and to follow my passion by pursuing a career as a writer. Since then, I settled in Slovenia where I indulge my passion for central-eastern Europe and the Balkans, the regions that inspire many of my books. I continue to travel widely, finding new stories to tell and places to discover. Moving here seemed only too natural as it was a way of bringing my ancestors' legacy full circle.

I often write in NUK, the National and University Library. Even though I can technically work from anywhere, NUK is an inspiring place to sit down, write, and be productive. If the weather is nice, I also enjoy writing along the banks of the Ljubljanica river in Trnovo. As a weird quirk, I’m probably most prolific while traveling on long plane, train, or bus trips. Perhaps because the country is so small, there is a sense of community here that doesn’t exist anywhere else I have lived. I often marvel at how safe Ljubljana is and how people seem to trust in that safety.

Ljubljana
Ljubljana
